Progressive Promises and Political Strategy: Biden’s Path to the Nomination
After his debated performance last month, President Biden has taken big steps to secure his position. He has embraced many left-wing policy ideas, influenced the party's nomination process, and limited unscripted moments. These actions have stabilized his candidacy for now, stopping top Democrats from leaving him, even though many are uneasy with him seeking another term at 81 years old. Only 20 Democrats in Congress have asked him to step aside, mainly because Biden has made promises to the progressive wing of his party.
Biden has promised to cap rent hikes, eliminate medical debt, and pursue other progressive policies if re-elected. Bernie Sanders has highlighted Biden’s plans to expand Social Security and Medicare, reduce childhood poverty, raise the minimum wage, and tackle other important issues. In Las Vegas, Biden is expected to call for laws to control rent increases, addressing the high rents that have strained American families. This proposal targets landlords with more than 50 units who raise rents by more than 5%, aiming to combat inflation and housing costs.
Biden is also considering setting term limits for Supreme Court justices and enforcing an ethics code, reflecting his concern about the court’s accountability. These changes would need congressional approval, which is unlikely in a divided Congress. Still, Biden's push for these reforms could energize his voters, especially as Republican nominee Donald Trump boasts about appointing three conservative justices. This move shows Biden’s commitment to fixing issues within the judiciary and aligns with his belief that the court is moving away from mainstream constitutional interpretation.
The Democratic National Committee is working hard to secure Biden's nomination weeks before the convention to prevent any rebellion within the party. This strategy, along with support from key figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, strengthens Biden's position. However, with JD Vance as Trump’s running mate, Biden faces a new challenge. Vance’s far-right positions and rhetoric go against the Democratic Party’s values. Biden must address Vance’s record and rhetoric directly and convincingly, as voters are still forming their opinions about him. This is a critical time for Biden to engage the left wing of the Democratic Party effectively, ensuring a united front as the election approaches.
